When Was The Battery Invented?

The practical use of electricity has been at our disposal since around the mid-late 1800's, but the use of electricity may go back even further.

A 2,000 year-old prehistoric battery, known as the Parthian Battery, was discovered in 1936 near Baghdad while constructing a railway. Dating back to the Parthian empire, the battery was built using a clay jar filled with a vinegar solution; inside, an iron rod surrounded by a copper cylinder was placed. Not everyone accepts the Parthian Battery as a source of energy, as it may have been used to electroplate gold or other precious metals to a surface. It is said that the Egyptians were electroplating antimony onto copper over 4,300 years ago.

In 1800, Alessandro Volta discovered that certain fluids could generate a continuous flow of electrical power when used as a conductor. This discovery led to the invention of the first voltaic cell, aka battery. After more investigation, Volta discovered that voltage could be increased if voltaic cells were stacked on top of each other.
