To keep your flooded lead-acid batteries operating at at their best, periodic watering is required. Here is a quick how-to guide for watering your batteries:
Double check whether or not your battery requires periodic watering.
There will be information on the battery that indicates whether or not it requires watering, and if it can be opened and serviced. Depending on the battery type, there will be labels that state either "DO NOT OPEN" or "KEEP VENT CAPS TIGHT FOLLOWING WATERING SERVICE." Be sure to follow the warning label.
Understand when to add water.
Conventional lead-acid batteries contain an electrolyte mixture of sulfuric acid and distilled water. For proper operation, safety, and longevity, the active material in the battery plates should be should be continuously bathed in electrolytes.
You should only ever water your battery if it is fully charged, but it is also important to check the water level before charging. There must be enough water to cover the battery's exposed plates before charging; once charged, you can add enough water to bring the level to just below the top of the cell, below the vent.
You should never add sulfuric acid to your battery. When the electrolyte is low, filling the battery with distilled water will keep it healthy and safe.
Avoid overwatering.
The density of your battery's electrolyte solution increases while charging. If you add too much water before fully charging, the electrolyte will expand causing overflow and damage to the battery. Excessive watering can also cause electrolyte dilution and will result in reduced performance. Make sure to check your battery's fluid level regularly after charging.
Use the right kind of water.
Make sure you are using water that will not harm your battery. Tap water contains minerals that can cause your battery damage, even in small amounts, and even if it's purified. Using distilled or deionized water is recommended as it is free from these additional minerals.
Keep your battery watered year-round to ensure long lasting performance.
