Volt Hockey is an accessible form of hockey, played in a specially designed battery powered Hockey Sport Chair, by people with a variety of disabilities. It began in Denmark and quickly spread to other Scandinavian countries and grew to over 50 teams. And now, it has come to Canada! The game is played by two teams in an indoor gymnasium. There are 3 players on each team on the court at a time. There are two 15-minute halves in a game and two referees. The league launched April 9th 2016 at Variety Village in Toronto, an ‘all ability facility’, perfect for hosting the Volt league games. “Its absolutely incredible for kids who would never otherwise get a chance to play organized sports and it really touches your heart to see their faces light up when they are playing” said our Canadian Energy CEO, Craig Ballard. The participation of youth with physical disabilities in sports promises to improve their physical, emotional and mental well-being. Beyond the immediate health benefits of participating in recreation, team-based sports provide youths, their families, and the community with a wider social involvement and an increased support network.
